Why are license plates stolen?
· Often to commit another crime … police call it a gateway crime.
What happens to you?
· If a thief puts your plate on his car…
o Robs a bank and someone turns in the plate number
• The police contact you!
o Smashes things with his car and someone turns in the plate number
• The police contact you!
o Does a “Gas and Dash” while security cameras record the plate number
• The police contact you!
o Speeds past a traffic camera
• The ticket is mailed to you!
· If a thief steals a car, puts the plates from the stolen car on your car and your plates on the stolen car?
o You probably will not notice anything amiss with your car until the police pull you over for driving a stolen vehicle!
What do you have to do after your license plate has been stolen?
· • Report theft to local police report
• Fill out police report
• Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles
• Obtain a temporary tag or new plate
• Mount tag using more secure fasteners
No license plate security system in 100% secure. If a thief really wants to steal your tags they can get them no matter what you do. However, screws with Phillips head or Slot heads are way too common. Those types of heads are like an unlocked door. Any thief would own that type of screwdriver. Our screws have Robertson square drive heads. Those heads are quite common in Canada but fairly uncommon in the United States. If a thief sees that your tags are held on with screws that he has no tool to unscrew, he will probably move on to an easier target.
Our screws are made of grade 18-8 stainless steel and will not rust. The package includes a set of stainless steel washers to help eliminate loosening of screws by vibration. Also included in the pack is a #3 Robertson bit to install the screws. Square drive bits sell elsewhere on eBay for $3 to $4 each. This bit can be driven with any ¼” socket, ¼” nut driver or ¼” wrench. If you have none of those you could hold the bit with Vise grips or a pair of pliers.
If your license plate screws thread into anything plastic or plastic inserts then these screws are probably what you need. If they thread into metal, then these screws probably WILL NOT WORK right for you.
Here is what is included in the security license plate mounting set:
1.) Four Robertson pan head (square drive) stainless steel screws
2.) Four stainless steel flat washers
4.) One #3 Robertson bit
One payment of $5.50 buys 4 screws, 4 washers and 1 bit …
